Entryway Sizes

Calculators for the measurements an entry or a hallway comes down to: the runner on the floor, the console against the wall, what hangs above it and the light overhead.

Runner and console

Size a runner for the hall, with floor showing around it, or a console for the entry wall that leaves room to walk past.

On the walls

Size the mirror or art above the console, then find the height to hang it, over the console or on a bare hallway wall.

Light

Size a chandelier for the entry and keep it high enough to walk under, and work out the light the space needs; choose Hallway or entry as the room type.

Start with the floor

A hallway runner is sized from the hall, not from the rug aisle. The entryway runner and console size calculator takes the hall's width and length and works out the runner to look for: narrow enough to leave a strip of floor showing on each side, short enough to stop before each end, and the standard size that comes closest. When a hall is longer than stock runners come, it says how to use two.

The same calculator sizes the console table for an entry wall: how long it can be without crowding the wall, and how deep it can be while leaving a clear path to walk past it.

Above the console

A mirror or a piece of art over the console is sized from the console. The wall art size calculator has a console mode for that, and the picture hanging height calculator says where the nail goes, over furniture or on a bare hallway wall.

Light overhead

An entry with a high ceiling often gets a chandelier. The chandelier size calculator sizes one for the room and keeps it high enough to walk under. For the light the space needs overall, the room lumens calculator has a hallway and entry room type.

How these tools work

Each calculator states the rule it uses and the assumptions behind it, right on the page under "How we calculate." The result is a starting point you can adjust to how you use the space.
