Umbrella to look for
A 9 ft round umbrella
For a 48 in round table, look for a round canopy 8 to 10 ft across, which reaches 24 to 36 in past the edge on every side, so the chairs are in the shade too. 9 ft is the standard round size closest to 30 in past the edge. Run the pole through the table into a base of at least 50 lb; on its own, the same umbrella needs 75 lb. Close it whenever you're not using it or the wind picks up.

Measure the table across its top, or the seating area from the outside of the seats. An umbrella's size is its open canopy, edge to edge. How we calculate

The short answer
A patio umbrella should reach 24 to 36 in past the table on every side, so the people sitting at it are in the shade, not just the tabletop. Over a 48 in round table that’s a canopy 8 to 10 ft across, and 9 ft is the standard size that comes closest. Over a rectangular table, a round canopy has to reach past the corners; a rectangular canopy follows the table instead.
Stand it in a heavy enough base: at least 50 lb with the pole through a table, or 75 lb on its own, more for big and rectangular canopies.
How to measure
- Round table: measure across the top, edge to edge.
- Rectangular or square table: measure the length and the width of the top.
- Seating area without a table: measure the area the long way and the short way, from the outside of the seats.
- Look up and around: note any wall, railing, gutter or branch the open canopy has to clear.
How to use the calculator
- Choose a table or a seating area.
- Enter the table’s shape and size, or the seating area’s length and width. For a table, say whether the pole goes through it or the umbrella stands on its own base.
- Read the result: the canopy to look for, round or rectangular, and the base it needs. Every standard size is listed as Fits, Tight or Doesn’t fit, with how far it reaches past the edge.
- Save or share it. Copy link keeps your numbers in the address.
How we calculate
The reach below puts the chairs in the shade, and the base weights keep the umbrella standing. When your umbrella’s instructions ask for a heavier base, follow them.
- How far past the edge: at least 24 in on every side, up to 36 in for bigger tables. Down to 18 in is Tight, a little short of 24 in, so the chairs get less shade. Up to 48 in is Tight too: more canopy than the table needs.
- Which size we pick: the standard size closest to 30 in past the edge, the middle of the range, which leaves room for chairs pulled out 6 to 8 in from the table. Round umbrellas come 6 to 13 ft across, rectangles 6.5 × 10 ft to 10 × 13 ft.
- Rectangular tables: a round canopy is measured from the table’s diagonal, so it reaches past the corners. A rectangular canopy is measured along each side, and the side that reaches less sets its fit. Over a long table, a round canopy leaves the people at the ends in the sun.
- Seating areas: the area’s long side plus the same reach on each side.
- Base: at least 50 lb with the pole through a table, and 80 lb for a bigger market umbrella. On its own, at least 75 lb for any freestanding umbrella, and 100 lb for bigger canopies and rectangles.
Worked examples
Worked example
A 48 in round patio table
What we know
- Table: 48 in round
- Umbrella: through the table
How it works out
- Round canopy: 48 in + 2 × (24 to 36 in) = 96 to 120 in (8 to 10 ft); the standard size closest to 30 in past the edge is 9 ft.
Worked example
A 72 × 40 in rectangular table for six
What we know
- Table: 72 in × 40 in
- Umbrella: through the table
How it works out
- Round canopy: the diagonal, 82.4 in, + 2 × (24 to 36 in) = 131 to 154 in (11 to 12.5 ft); the standard size closest to 30 in past the corners is 11 ft.
- Rectangular canopy: 40 in + 2 × (24 to 36 in) by 72 in + 2 × (24 to 36 in); the closest standard size is 8 × 11 ft.
For a 72 × 40 in table, a round canopy has to reach past the corners: look for one 11 to 12.5 ft across, which reaches 24 to 36 in past them, so every chair is in the shade. 11 ft is the standard round size closest to 30 in past the corners. A rectangular canopy follows the shape instead: an 8 × 11 ft one reaches 28 in past the sides and 30 in past the ends. Run the pole through the table into a base of at least 80 lb; on its own, the same umbrella needs 100 lb. Close it whenever you're not using it or the wind picks up.
Worked example
A seating area 6 by 5 ft, the umbrella on its own base
What we know
- Seating area: 6 ft × 5 ft (72 in × 60 in)
- Umbrella: on its own base
How it works out
- Round canopy: the long side, 72 in, + 2 × (24 to 36 in) = 120 to 144 in (10 to 12 ft); the standard size closest to 30 in past the edge is 11 ft.
For a seating area 6 ft by 5 ft, look for a round canopy 10 to 12 ft across, which reaches 24 to 36 in past the seats the long way. 11 ft is the standard round size closest to 30 in past the edge. Stand it in a base of at least 100 lb. A cantilever umbrella, with its pole to one side, needs a much heavier base: at least 200 lb for one 10 to 11.5 ft across. Close it whenever you're not using it or the wind picks up.
Umbrella size by table size
The canopy that reaches 24 to 36 in past a round table on every side, and the standard size closest to 30 in.
| Round table | Canopy across | Standard size |
|---|---|---|
| 30 in | 6.5 to 8.5 ft | 7.5 ft |
| 36 in | 7 to 9 ft | 7.5 ft |
| 42 in | 7.5 to 9.5 ft | 9 ft |
| 48 in | 8 to 10 ft | 9 ft |
| 54 in | 8.5 to 10.5 ft | 10 ft |
| 60 in | 9 to 11 ft | 10 ft |
| 72 in | 10 to 12 ft | 11 ft |
Rectangular tables
A round umbrella measured across the corners, or a rectangular one that follows the table.
| Table | Round umbrella | Rectangular umbrella |
|---|---|---|
| 60 in × 36 in | 11 ft | 8 × 10 ft |
| 72 in × 40 in | 11 ft | 8 × 11 ft |
| 84 in × 42 in | 13 ft | 8 × 11 ft |
| 96 in × 42 in | 13 ft |
A long table for eight or more outgrows a single round umbrella. Use two umbrellas instead, or a rectangular one.
Base weight
The lightest base for each standard size, with the pole through a table or standing on its own.
| Umbrella | Through a table | On its own |
|---|---|---|
| 7.5 ft round | 50 lb | 75 lb |
| 9 ft round | 50 lb | 75 lb |
| 10 ft round | 80 lb | 100 lb |
| 11 ft round | 80 lb | 100 lb |
| 13 ft round | 100 lb | 100 lb |
| 6.5 × 10 ft | 100 lb | 100 lb |
| 8 × 10 ft | 100 lb | 100 lb |
| 8 × 11 ft | 100 lb | 100 lb |
| 10 × 13 ft | 100 lb | 100 lb |
A cantilever umbrella hangs its canopy from an arm to one side, which leaves the space under it open for a sectional, and needs a much heavier base: at least 200 lb for one 10 to 11.5 ft across. On a rooftop or a raised deck, double or triple the base weight.
Wind and clearance
Close the umbrella whenever you’re not using it. No umbrella should be left open and unattended, whatever its size or base. Close it before sustained winds pass 25 mph, and on a windy day, take it down as well.
Aim for about 7 ft of headroom under the open canopy. Real canopies often open lower than that at the edge, so check the open clearance on the product page.
Before you buy
Check the table’s umbrella hole and the umbrella’s pole: they have to match, and so does the base’s stem. Measure the canopy as sold: an umbrella’s size is its open canopy, edge to edge. For a dining table outdoors, the dining table size calculator sizes the table for your people and your patio first. For light after dark, the string lights length calculator works out how many feet of lights the patio takes and where to hang them.
Before you buy, mark the canopy’s size on the patio around the table with string or chalk, and look at it at the time of day you use the table most, so you can picture where the shade will fall.
Frequently asked questions
What size umbrella for a 48 inch table?
A canopy 8 to 10 ft across, which reaches 24 to 36 in past the edge on every side; 9 ft is the standard size closest to 30 in past the edge. Run the pole through the table into a base of at least 50 lb.
How much bigger than the table should a patio umbrella be?
At least 24 in bigger on every side, so the canopy reaches past the chairs, not just the tabletop. For a bigger table, go up to about 36 in past the edge.
What size umbrella for a rectangular table?
A round canopy has to reach past the corners, so it's measured from the table's diagonal: a 72 by 40 inch table for six takes an 11 ft round umbrella. A rectangular canopy follows the table's shape, and 8 × 11 ft fits the same table.
What size umbrella for a 60 inch round table?
10 ft is the standard size closest to 30 in past the edge, and an umbrella a size up still fits. Over a 72 inch table, look for 11 ft.
How heavy should a patio umbrella base be?
At least 50 lb with the pole through a table, and 75 lb on its own. Bigger and rectangular canopies need more, up to 100 lb. A cantilever umbrella needs its own heavy base: at least 200 lb for one 10 to 11.5 ft across.
What size umbrella for a seating area without a table?
Measure the seating area the long way and add 24 in on each side. A seating area 6 by 5 feet takes an 11 ft umbrella. For a sectional, a cantilever umbrella keeps the pole out of the way.
When should you close a patio umbrella?
Whenever you're not using it, and as soon as the wind picks up. Don't leave one open and unattended at all, and close it before sustained winds pass 25 mph.
