How High to Mount a 65 Inch TV
By Nora Callahan · Updated
The short answer
Hang a 65 inch TV so the center of the screen is at your eye level when you sit, about 42 in off the floor for most adults. At that height the 32 in screen runs from 26 in to 58 in. If a console or mantel below is taller than 26 in, raise the TV just enough to clear it.

Marking the wall for a 65 inch screen
The screen of a 65 inch TV measures about 56.5 in across and 32 in from top to bottom. Draw a level pencil line at 42 in where the middle of the TV will go: that’s your center. The top edge will sit 16 in above the line, at 58 in, and the bottom edge the same distance below, at 26 in. A TV’s mounting holes aren’t always in the middle of its back, so measure from the holes to the center of the screen and shift the bracket marks by that amount.
Centered that way, the top of the screen is 8° above your eyes from a sofa 10 ft away, nowhere near 35°, the most you’d want to look up to the top of a picture.
Above a TV console
Any console taller than 26 in lifts a 65 inch TV off the eye line, because its bottom edge can’t dip behind the furniture. The table shows how gently that happens. With the bottom no lower than a 36 in line, the center moves to 52 in, still only 5° above eye level from 10 ft away. The calculator lets you add the gap you want between the console and the screen, so enter the console’s height plus that gap as the lowest spot.
Over a fireplace, right at the limit
A mantel line is where a 65 inch TV runs out of room. With the bottom at 56 in, the center lands at 72 in and the top at 88 in. From 10 ft, the middle of the picture is 14° up, just inside the 15° comfort line; a seat closer than that tips the angle past it. For that seat, keep the bottom edge at 58 in or lower.
Before any of that, check the manual, since some TVs shouldn’t sit over a fireplace or near a heat source at all.
Frequently asked questions
What is the center height for a 65 inch TV?
About 42 in from the floor: the average seated eye height, and the height the TV mounting height calculator starts with. The middle of the screen goes at eye level, so you look straight at the picture. Measure your own eye height from the sofa if your household sits taller or lower.
How high is the top of a 65 inch TV when it's mounted at eye level?
About 58 in from the floor. The screen is 32 in tall, so half of it, 16 in, sits above the 42 in center line and the other half below it, which puts the bottom edge at 26 in.
Is a 65 inch TV too high over a fireplace?
Usually close to the limit. With its bottom at 56 in, the center lands at 72 in, 14° above eye level from 10 ft away, just inside the 15° guideline; any closer and you look up more. Check the manual too: the maker may say not to put the TV over a fireplace.
How far away should you sit from a 65 inch TV?
About 6 ft 6 in to 8 ft 9 in, where the screen fills 30° to 40° of your view. The TV size calculator works out that range for any size, and the other way around: the size for the seat you have.
