How High to Mount a 75 Inch TV

By Nora Callahan · Updated

The short answer

Mount a 75 inch TV with the middle of the screen at seated eye level, about 42 in from the floor. The screen is 37 in tall, so the bottom edge comes down to 23.5 in and the top reaches 60.5 in. Furniture under it taller than 23.5 in pushes the TV up, and a mantel pushes it past the comfortable angle.

A tall screen hangs low

At 37 in tall and 65.5 in wide, a 75 inch TV has to come down a long way to keep its middle at your eyes. Centered at 42 in, its bottom edge sits only 23.5 in above the floor and its top at 60.5 in. That can look low on a bare wall, but the low bottom edge is simply what a big screen at eye level needs. From a seat 10 ft away you look up just 9° to the top edge.

Because the edge is so low, nearly any media console under a 75 inch TV becomes the thing that sets its height. Measure the console, add the gap you like between console and screen, and use that as the lowest spot in the calculator.

When furniture lifts it

The table above shows the climb. Over a 36 in dresser or tall console, the center rises to 54.5 in and the top to 73 in, a 6° look up from 10 ft away. That’s still a comfortable view from the sofa.

Why a mantel is too high from a normal seat

On a mantel line at 56 in, the center of a 75 inch TV goes to 74.5 in and the top all the way to 93 in. From 10 ft away, the middle of the screen is 15.1° above your eyes, just past the 15° that keeps the view comfortable. To stay within it from that seat, the bottom edge would need to stay at 55.5 in or below. Three things fix it: a lower spot, a seat farther back, or a tilting mount that angles the screen down toward you. Check the manual first, too, since some TVs shouldn’t be placed over a fireplace at all.

Frequently asked questions

How low should a 75 inch TV hang?

With its center at an eye height of 42 in, the bottom of a 75 inch screen sits at about 23.5 in from the floor. That low edge is what keeps the middle of a tall screen at eye level. If your media console is taller, set the bottom just above it instead.

Can you mount a 75 inch TV above a fireplace?

It's past the guideline from an average seat. With its bottom at 56 in, the center lands at 74.5 in: 15.1° above eye level from 10 ft away, more than 15°. Some TVs also aren't meant to go over a fireplace, so check your manual before you plan it.

Does a 75 inch TV need a tilting mount?

At eye level it doesn't. When furniture or a mantel pushes it up, a tilting mount angles the screen down toward the seat, which makes a TV that has to hang high easier to watch.

How far should you sit from a 75 inch TV?

About 7 ft 6 in to 10 ft 1 in. In that range the screen fills 30° to 40° of your view. The TV size calculator gives the range for any size and the size for any seat.
