Table to look for

A 54 in coffee table, 16 to 18 in high

For an 84 in sofa, look for a table 42 to 56 in long; 54 in is the largest standard length in that range. Make it 18 to 30 in deep, which leaves at least 30 in to walk past. Set it 14 to 18 in from the sofa.

Measure the space in front of the sofa from the front edge of the seat, not from the back. For a sectional, size the table to the side it sits in front of. How we calculate

The short answer

A coffee table should be about two-thirds as long as the sofa, and at least half as long. Make it level with the seat or up to 2 in lower, set it 14 to 18 in from the sofa, and leave about 30 in between the table and the TV stand or chair across from it so people can walk past. For a standard 84 in sofa with an 18 in seat, that’s a table 42 to 56 in long and 16 to 18 in high; 54 in is the largest standard length in that range.

The depth is where rooms differ. Whatever is left in front of the sofa after the gap and the walkway is the deepest table that fits, and the calculator works it out from your measurements.

How to measure

Sofa54 inTV stand or chair14 to 18 in36 in walkway
  1. Sofa width: measure from the outside of one arm to the other. For a sectional, measure only the side the table sits in front of, and leave the chaise out.
  2. Seat height: measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion, pressing down lightly where you’d sit.
  3. Space in front of the sofa: measure from the front edge of the seat to the TV stand, chair or wall across from it. If nothing is across from the sofa, measure to where people walk through the room.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the sofa width, the seat height and the space in front of the sofa. The room’s other measurements don’t change the answer.
  2. Choose the shape: a rectangle or oval, or a round table. A round table is as deep as it is wide, so the space in front of the sofa limits its size more.
  3. Read the result: the size to look for, the height, the depth that fits and how far from the sofa to set it. Every standard size is listed as Fits, Tight or Doesn’t fit, with the reason.
  4. Save or share it. Copy link keeps your numbers in the address, and the link to the rug size calculator carries your sofa width.

How we calculate

Three measurements decide the table: the sofa’s length, its seat height and the space in front of it.

  • Length: about two-thirds of the sofa, and at least half. A standard size Fits from one-half to two-thirds of the sofa and is Tight within 4 in of either end. A round table’s diameter follows the same range.
  • Height: level with the seat to 2 in lower. A table a little lower than that works too, so the exact height is a matter of taste.
  • Distance from the sofa: 14 to 18 in, with 18 in the comfortable distance.
  • Depth: the space in front of the sofa, minus 18 in to sit down and 30 in to walk past to the TV stand or chair across. In a narrower room, 24 in still works, and the calculator marks a table that only fits with 14 in and 24 in as Tight.
  • Standard sizes: rectangles 36 to 60 in long and 18 to 30 in deep, round tables 30 to 48 in across.
  • Which size we pick: the largest standard size that fits. When the sofa is longer than the longest common size serves, the calculator offers that size and two tables side by side, which also suits a sectional.

Worked examples

Worked example

An 84 in sofa with 7 ft in front of it

What we know

  • Sofa: 84 in wide, seat 18 in high
  • Space in front: 7 ft (84 in)
  • Table: rectangle or oval

How it works out

  1. Length: one-half to two-thirds of 84 in = 42 to 56 in; the closest standard size is 54 in.
  2. Height: 18 in seat, level to 2 in lower = 16 to 18 in.
  3. Depth: 7 ft (84 in) − 18 in to the sofa − 30 in to walk past = 36 in at most.

For an 84 in sofa, look for a table 42 to 56 in long; 54 in is the largest standard length in that range. Make it 18 to 30 in deep, which leaves at least 30 in to walk past. Set it 14 to 18 in from the sofa.

Worked example

A 64 in loveseat in a narrow room

What we know

  • Sofa: 64 in wide, seat 17 in high
  • Space in front: 5 ft 6 in (66 in)
  • Table: rectangle or oval

How it works out

  1. Length: one-half to two-thirds of 64 in = 32 to 42 in; the closest standard size is 42 in.
  2. Height: 17 in seat, level to 2 in lower = 15 to 17 in.
  3. Depth: 5 ft 6 in (66 in) − 18 in to the sofa − 30 in to walk past = 18 in at most.

For a 64 in sofa, look for a table 32 to 42 in long; 42 in is the largest standard length in that range. Make it 18 in deep, which leaves at least 30 in to walk past. Set it 14 to 18 in from the sofa.

Worked example

A round table for a sectional's 96 in side

What we know

  • Sofa: 96 in wide, seat 18 in high
  • Space in front: 8 ft (96 in)
  • Table: round

How it works out

  1. Diameter: one-half to two-thirds of 96 in = 48 to 64 in; the closest standard size is 48 in.
  2. Height: 18 in seat, level to 2 in lower = 16 to 18 in.
  3. Depth: 8 ft (96 in) − 18 in to the sofa − 30 in to walk past = 48 in at most, which the diameter has to fit too.

For a 96 in sofa, look for a table 48 to 64 in across; 48 in is the largest standard diameter in that range. Set it 14 to 18 in from the sofa.

Coffee table size by sofa width

A 60 in rectangle is the longest common size. For a longer sofa or sectional side, look for a longer table on the product pages, or set two tables side by side.

How deep a table the space takes

The deepest table that leaves 18 in to the sofa and 30 in to walk past, and the deepest at a squeeze, with 14 in and 24 in.

6 ft 6 in (78 in)30 in40 in
7 ft (84 in)36 in46 in
8 ft (96 in)48 in58 in

Most rectangular coffee tables are 18 to 30 in deep, so about 66 in in front of the sofa is where a coffee table starts to fit comfortably. With 7 ft, a table up to 36 in deep fits, which covers every standard rectangle and the smaller round tables.

Shape and placement

A rectangle or oval follows the line of the sofa. Round and oval tables take up less space and leave more room to walk around, which helps in a busy room or a small one. A square or round table sits well inside the corner of an L-shaped sectional.

Center the table on the sofa, or on the main seat of a sectional. If there’s a rug under the seating group, keep all the table’s legs on it. The rug size calculator picks a rug for the same sofa.

Before you buy

Check the product page for the height to the top of the table, not to a lower shelf, and for which measurement is the length and which the depth: listings don’t always name them the same way. A lift-top table rises toward you when you open it, so look at its closed height against your seat.

Still choosing the sofa? The sofa size calculator finds the largest sofa or sectional that fits your wall and room, with the coffee table counted in front.

Nora's note

Before you order, mark the table’s outline on the floor with painter’s tape at the distance the calculator gives you. Sit down, stand up and walk past it a few times: it’s the quickest way to see whether the size and the gap feel right.

Frequently asked questions

How big should a coffee table be?

About two-thirds the length of your sofa, and at least half of it. For an 84 inch sofa, that's a table 42 to 56 in long, and 54 in is the largest standard length in that range. Its depth depends on the space in front of the sofa: the calculator works that out too.

How tall should a coffee table be?

Level with the sofa's seat or up to 2 in lower. Most coffee tables are 16 to 18 in high, which suits a typical sofa seat of 17 to 19 in.

How far should a coffee table be from the couch?

14 to 18 in. That's close enough to reach a cup from the seat and far enough to stand up without bumping the table. 18 in is the roomier end.

How much space do you need between a coffee table and a TV stand?

About 30 in where people walk past, and at least 24 in in a narrow room. Add the gap on the sofa side and even a shallow 18 in table needs about 66 in in front of the sofa, or 56 in at the very least.

What size coffee table for a sectional?

Size it to the side of the sectional it sits in front of, not the whole L, and leave the chaise out of the measurement. A square or round table also sits well inside the corner of an L-shaped sectional.

What size round coffee table do I need?

One about half to two-thirds as wide as the sofa is long, and no deeper than the space in front of the sofa allows, because a round table is as deep as it is wide. Round coffee tables are usually 30 to 48 in across; for an 84 inch sofa in a deep enough room, that's a 48 in table.

What is the standard size of a coffee table?

Rectangular coffee tables are usually 36 to 60 in long and 18 to 30 in deep from front to back, and 16 to 18 in high. Round ones run 30 to 48 in across.
