Table to look for

60 × 40 in table

A 60 × 40 in table seats 6 comfortably and leaves at least 52 in between the table and the walls, room to walk behind the chairs.

Sizes to compare

  • 48 × 40 inTightseats 6 snugly, 52 in to the walls
  • 60 × 40 inFitsseats 6 comfortably, 52 in to the walls
  • 72 × 40 inFitsseats 6 comfortably, 52 in to the walls
  • 120 × 40 inDoesn't fittoo big for the room

Fits: everyone seated with about 30 in each and at least 36 in to the walls. Tight: only 24 in each, or 32 in to 36 in to the walls.

Table sizes are the sizes they're sold as, at a standard 40 in width for rectangles. Measure from the table edge, not the legs. How we calculate

A wood dining table with six chairs on a patterned rug under a chandelier

The short answer

A dining table needs about 24 in of edge for each person, and about 30 in for elbow room. Around it, leave about 36 in between the table and the walls, so chairs pull out and people can edge past. That makes 60 × 40 in the table for six and 96 × 40 in the table for eight, or a 60 in round and a 72 in round table if you like round.

The calculator checks every standard size against your number of people and your room, so you see the table that fits and the sizes on either side of it.

How to measure

  1. Measure the room wall to wall, both ways. If a sideboard, cabinet or radiator stays along a wall, measure to its front instead.
  2. Measure the table top if you already have a table: length and width, or the diameter of a round table. Measure the top, not the legs.
  3. Count your everyday diners. Size the table for the people who eat there most days; an extending table can cover the holidays.
  4. Mark it out. Painter’s tape on the floor at the table’s size, plus a chair pulled out behind it, shows how the room will feel.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose what you want to find: a table size for a number of people, or how many your own table seats.
  2. Pick the shape: rectangular (square and oval tables work the same way) or round.
  3. Enter the people or the table, and the room. The result updates as you type.
  4. Read the result. You get the size to buy and the sizes on either side, each labeled Fits, Tight or Doesn’t fit with the reason, and a plan of the room. Copy link keeps your numbers in the address, and the chandelier and rug calculators pick up your table from the links below.

How we calculate

The spacing below gives each person room to eat and room to pull a chair out. Your own chairs and how people move through the room decide the rest.

  • Seats along the sides: one person per 24 in of table edge at most, and about 30 in each to sit comfortably, with a chair at each end. That gives each length its range: a 72 in table seats 6 to 8 and a 96 in table seats 8 to 10.
  • Round tables: a 48 in table seats 4 to 6, a 60 in table 6 to 8 and a 72 in table 8 to 10. The first number is the comfortable one.
  • Space around the table: a table Fits the room when it leaves at least 36 in to the walls on every side. It’s Tight with 32 in to 36 in, which works only where no one walks behind the chairs. To walk behind seated diners, plan on 44 in. A quick check: the room should be at least 6 ft longer and wider than the table.
  • Standard sizes: rectangular tables 48 to 120 in long, at 40 in wide, the wide end of standard dining table widths; round tables 42 to 72 in across.
  • Which size we pick: the smallest table that seats everyone comfortably and leaves the full space around it. A table that seats everyone only if they sit closer is marked Tight.

Worked examples

Worked example

A table for six in a 12 × 15 ft dining room

What we know

  • People: 6
  • Table shape: rectangle
  • Room: 12 ft by 15 ft

How it works out

  1. A 60 × 40 in table seats 6 comfortably and leaves at least 52 in between the table and the walls, room to walk behind the chairs.
  2. 48 × 40 in: tight, seats 6 snugly, 52 in to the walls.
  3. 72 × 40 in: also fits, seats 6 comfortably, 52 in to the walls.
  4. 120 × 40 in: doesn't fit, too big for the room.

Choose a 60 × 40 in table.

Worked example

A round table for eight in the same room

What we know

  • People: 8
  • Table shape: round
  • Room: 12 ft by 15 ft

How it works out

  1. A 72 in round table seats 8 comfortably and leaves at least 36 in between the table and the walls.
  2. 54 in round: doesn't fit, seats 6 at most.
  3. 60 in round: tight, seats 8 snugly, 42 in to the walls.

Choose a 72 in round table.

Worked example

How many fit at a 72 × 40 in table in a 10 × 12 ft room

What we know

  • Table: 72 in by 40 in
  • Room: 10 ft by 12 ft

How it works out

  1. At 30 in a person: 2 on each long side and 1 at each end, 6 in all.
  2. At 24 in a person: 3 on each long side and 1 at each end, 8 in all.
  3. Space to the walls: 40 in across the table and 36 in along it, so at least 36 in.

A 72 × 40 in table seats 6 comfortably and up to 8. It leaves at least 36 in between the table and the walls.

Before you buy

Armchairs take more room than side chairs, so if yours have arms, plan on the roomier 30 in a person. Check where the legs sit, too: on a table with a leg at each corner, the end seats work best when the legs are far enough apart for a chair.

A round table seats a small group closer together and has no corners to walk around, which helps in a square room. A rectangle seats more people for its width and suits a long, narrow room.

In a kitchen, the kitchen island size calculator sizes an island with stools the same way, from the floor around it. The same seating rules work for a table on the patio. To shade it, the patio umbrella size calculator takes the table’s size and works out the umbrella that reaches past the chairs.

Nora's note

If the room is tight, a bench on one side of a rectangular table slides under it when no one’s sitting there, which keeps the walkway clear.

Frequently asked questions

What size dining table seats 6?

A 60 × 40 in rectangular table seats six comfortably, with a chair at each end. For a round table, choose 60 in round. Both need about 36 in of floor around them so chairs pull out, so check your room with the calculator.

How many people fit at a 72 inch table?

A 72 inch table that's 40 in wide seats 6 to 8: six with about 30 in each, eight if everyone sits at 24 in each, with one chair at each end in both cases.

How many people can sit at a 60 inch round table?

6 to 8: the lower number with elbow room, the higher if everyone sits close. A 48 inch round table seats 4 to 6, and a 72 inch round table 8 to 10.

What size table seats 8?

To seat eight comfortably, look at a 96 × 40 in rectangular table or a 72 in round table. A 72 inch rectangle seats eight only if everyone sits a little closer.

How much space do you need around a dining table?

About 36 in from the table's edge to the walls or other furniture, so people can pull their chairs out and edge past. To walk behind seated diners, plan on 44 in. Where no one walks behind the chairs, 32 in is the least.

How big should a dining room be for a 72 inch table?

At least 9 ft 4 in by 12 ft for a 72 by 40 inch table. That's the table plus 36 in on every side: add 6 ft to the table's length and width.
